The Program
The Maryland Trial Advocacy Institute is designed to develop professional,
skilled and responsible trial lawyers through a unique program of observing and
learning from the leading litigators and judges in the state. This seven-day
trial advocacy course utilizes team teaching and actual trial practice in both
civil and criminal litigation as the principal methods of instruction in an
intensive workshop format. Videotapes of each participant’s performances will
also be made and critiqued. This is a unique opportunity to learn effective
trial advocacy through student performance under the guidance of experienced
judges and lawyers who generously devote their time to serve as members of our
faculty.
Teaching Method & Student Commitment
The 2008 Maryland Trial Advocacy Institute will extend for seven days, comprised
of two long weekend sessions. Enrollment is limited to students who commit
themselves to attend the full session. Admission to the bar is required, and
some trial experience is preferred for this program. Team teaching is the
principal method of instruction, modeled on the National Institute for Trial
Advocacy. Students will be assigned to a team with a maximum of 20 students
each. The teaching team for each section includes an experienced trial
practitioner as Team Leader, plus other trial judges and trial lawyers familiar
with teaching trial advocacy. The Team Leaders serve throughout the seven-day
sessions, while other members of the teaching team serve in special roles. In
most class sessions, the students perform as trial counsel in some phase of
preparation or trial for both civil and criminal trials. Members of the teaching
teams give demonstration performances, as well as constructive criticism of
student performances. During the final two days of the Institute, each student
will conduct a trial presided over by a Maryland Circuit Court Judge.
As a student in the class you will . . .
Perform daily and be critiqued on your live exercise and the videotape of your
performance
Observe a variety of role models and litigation styles demonstrated by
accomplished trial lawyers
Develop effective trial practice techniques suitable to your own personality and
talents
Classes meet early morning until early evening. Preparation outside class is
also required; this course is one of intense, full-time study during the
program. Participants should not expect to practice law during the seven days of
the program. Due to the nature of this program, students must attend each day of
the Institute.
