Friday, January 29th, 2010
9:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m.
Ecker Business Training Center
Columbia, MD
Course #10-4018
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
The expanded jurisdiction of the District Court, combined with the crowded Circuit Court dockets have made the District Court a more efficient, economical and attractive venue for the resolution of an increasing number of serious cases in the personal injury, landlord/tenant, commercial and domestic violence areas. The efficiency and savings in litigation costs and time translates into increased awards to clients and more timely resolution of disputes. The increased benefit of taking many cases to District Court is obvious the demands on the lawyer, however, are also greater. The District Court is not a place to wing it. Despite the perceived relaxed atmosphere, special skills are required to effectively manage and present a case within the confines of limited discovery and motions practice, and especially the limited budget and time constraints of a District Court case. You, the lawyer, must understand how to efficiently and properly handle cases in the District Court. This program will focus on the practical aspects of trying a case in District Court. The program will feature lectures and discussions relating to moving and defending a tort and a contract case in District Court, as well as other functions of the court including the Domestic Violence Act.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
· Attorneys newly admitted to practice in Maryland
· Experienced attorneys who do not regularly practice in
District Court, but want a refresher to keep up-to-date.
