FACULTY

Matt Hjortsberg is a partner at Bowie & Jensen, LLC and heads the firm's construction law practice group. He has extensive experience in litigating construction cases, including representing owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and surety/bond companies in all aspects of their businesses. He has tried cases in state and federal courts and before the American Arbitration Association. His notable construction cases include construction claims involving Ronald Reagan Airport, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), and Ripken Stadium. Mr. Hjortsberg frequently lectures on a variety of issues before members of the Baltimore Chapter of the American Subcontractors Association and recently provided insight on the differences between the AIA and ConsensusDoc construction contract documents. In addition to his construction law practice, Mr. Hjortsberg also concentrates in contract disputes, business dissolution disputes, theft of trade secrets claims, regulatory investigation and estate and trust litigation matters. He is a member of the Maryland Bar and the District of Columbia Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court of Maryland and the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia.

Michael W. Siri, Esq.
joined Bowie & Jensen, LLC as a litigation associate in September 2004. His practice focuses on commercial litigation, including construction law. Mr. Siri has represented owners, general contractors, and subcontractors on issues involving mechanic's liens, bid protests, acceleration, impact and delay claims, suspensions of work, change order, extra work and force account disputes, warranty claims, requests for equitable adjustments, payment and performance bond claims, insurance claims and disputes, prompt payment and conditional payment disputes, defective, incomplete or conflicting specifications, differing site conditions, and construction and design defects. Mr. Siri has experience with various construction projects including restaurants, residential single family homes, condominiums, high-rise hotels and resorts, residential swimming pools, multi-family housing, commercial distribution warehouses, commercial office buildings, retail complexes, and broadcast studios. He is a member of the Maryland Bar and the District of Columbia Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court of Maryland and the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia.

This half day seminar is designed to assist attorneys with the basics of construction law, including general considerations before entering into a construction contract, available claims and defenses for both public and private projects, and efficient methods for collection of payment for work performed or materials supplied. Our outstanding faculty will assist in identifying potential issues, beginning from contract negotiation to receiving final payment. Topics to be covered include construction contracts, change orders, changes to the construction contract, Maryland Prompt Payment Act, Maryland Construction Trust law, bond claims, Maryland Mechanic's Lien Law, Federal Miller Act and the Maryland Little Miller Act.
