What You Will Learn and Why You Should Attend...
The law regarding
unmarried couples is dynamic. There are new developments almost every day.
Lawyers who wish to represent unmarried couples must be familiar with a range of
issues in order to provide their clients competent representation.
Unmarried couples need planning for death and dissolution and the raising of
children in ways that married couples do not. Since family and estate law are
primarily dependent on state law, every jurisdiction treats these issues
differently. Because clients in the Washington metropolitan area easily move
between jurisdictions, attorneys must be attuned to these differences.
Accordingly, this program will address the differences in the law affecting
unmarried couples in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia.
Attorneys will learn about a host of important topics, including: formation of legal relationships through contract as well as through a state-created legal status; recognition of legal relationships formed elsewhere; creation of parental relationships through adoption, surrogacy, contract and de facto parenthood; wills, estate and tax planning for unmarried couples; dissolution, property disposition and custody and support of children.
