MICPEL is seeking an executive director (chief operating officer) who is responsible for the operation, on a fully self-sustaining basis, of the non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) educational institute, co-founded in 1976 by the Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) and the Law Schools of the University of Baltimore and the University of Maryland, to serve as the provider of continuing legal education for the 30,000+ members of the Maryland bar. MICPEL, with an annual operating budget of $2 million and a staff of 17, works with hundreds of volunteer lawyers, judges, law professors, and related professionals to produce a comprehensive annual curriculum of more than 60 CLE courses and to publish a library of over 40 practice oriented legal publications.
MICPEL’s executive director proposes and implements CLE policies and projects, plans and executes the annual budget, and supervises the staff, under the direction of MICPEL’s Board of Trustees, which is comprised of representatives of state, county, local and specialty bar associations throughout Maryland. The executive director also acts as liaison between the Board of Trustees and the MSBA’s Board of Governors and its various Sections and Committees, the Court of Appeals of Maryland and its Judicial Institute, and other local and specialty bar organizations. MICPEL’s CLE content is produced and marketed in the form of paper, electronic, video, audio, live in-person, and online presentations/materials, published in cooperation with LexisNexis, ThomsonWest, LegalSpan, and Carroll Community College.
Criteria for consideration of applicants for the position are as follows: JD degree and active membership in Maryland or other state bar is preferred; undergraduate degree in business, marketing or related field is desirable; minimum 5 years relevant work experience is required, including responsibility for business planning and management, direct staff supervision, and financial oversight; strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills; experience in working with volunteers; curriculum development, educational conferencing, meeting planning, legal editing and publishing; ability to work under pressure & manage multiple priorities; strong computer skills, including knowledge of office networks, member/customer databases, and distance learning technologies.
