This manual is directed toward the young lawyer or the occasional practitioner in the District Court. While there are a number of lengthy volumes which have been published concerning practice in the Maryland District Court, and the Maryland courts in general, most are directed primarily toward the substantive law.

It is presumed that a lawyer admitted to practice in Maryland has the skills and knowledge necessary to research and learn the substantive law in a given case. There is often very little which can be done, however, to research District Court practice and procedure.
The purpose of this manual is to offer the practitioner a reference that will provide insight into the practical aspects of District Court practice under the Maryland Rules and applicable Maryland Code provisions, as well as access to the knowledge and information acquired by the various contributors from their actual practice in the District Court.

The book covers:
· History and operation
· Jurisdiction and venue
· Complaint
· Notice of intention to defend
· Pleadings and discovery
· Trial
· Judgment and enforcement
· Special proceedings (landlord-tenant; replevin/detinue; small claims; domestic violence protective
  orders; and forfeiture hearings)
· Appeals from the district court
· Court contact information
· Clerk directory
· Cost schedule
· District court deadlines
· District court forms
· Table of authorities and table of cases
· Appeals from the District Court
· Mediation
· Appendix (includes rules on access to court records, dial up access, district court forms, contact
information, cost schedule, and much more)
